
Over two million Bangladeshi children who live in the slums and streets still have little or no access to basic primary education. CDL has aimed to reach a portion of these children by providing them with basic education and medical service to help them in taking part in the mainstream development efforts. CDL has launched its Urban Information Resource Centre (Chetana Bikash Kendra) in 1986 with a vision to enhance the accessibility to education facilities for urban poor children and to integrate child literacy with environmental and vocational training so that education becomes meaningful in their lives. This program aims at providing non-formal and formal educational opportunities for the street and slum children and youths who cannot attend regular schooling due to shortage of resources and low motivation of their parents. Students receive free education and other facilities in this school. They are also provided with free medicare. CDL has been working towards developing this school as a Centre of Excellence for underprivileged children. Some important features of the school are:

Community Development Library (CDL) founded the Chetana Bikash Kendra School in 1986 which provides primary level education from Nursery to Class Five. A scholarship fund has been set up with an aim to assist meritorious students of the school to continue their higher study. This fund helps students to get admitted in high schools and also bears their all educational expenditure, tiffin, uniform, educational materials and transport costs. Presently 43 students are receiving scholarship from the students’ welfare fund. Your financial contribution in the scholarship fund of Chetana Bikash Kendra School will pave the way for the underprivileged students to attain higher education.
CDL has a vocational training centre. Vocational trainings are provided based on specific interest and knack of the trainee and demand of such training in the market. tailoring, sewing and embroidery and electric works – vocational training on these three trades are given to the trainees. CBK supplies all the necessary materials needed to impart trainings in these three trades. Per year 100 persons received vocational training.
Yasmin Akhter Jhunu (22) is a student of CBK Vocational Centre. She hails from a family which has been grappling with economic problems since long. Yasmin came to know about CBK Vocational Training Centre from some neighbors. She visited the centre and subsequently got herself admitted into the centre. She has completed her Tailoring training course in August 2007. Later, she bought a sewing machine by borrowing money from a relative. Now she makes dresses for children and earns around 3000 Taka a month. She has received some orders from CBK also, and has earned a good amount of money. Now that she also is earning money, their economic worries have decreased and family peace is back. She wants to earn more money and ensure financial solvency of the family. She also wants her son to become a highly educated and high-ranking government officer. She hopes her son will fulfill her wishes.
CBK Vocational Training Centre has developed an Outlet/sales centre at 11/3 Rayer Bazer, Dhaka for take work orders and sales for own produced Development.
